Nonviolent crime may mean less severe punishments

Criminal prosecution for possession of drugs for personal use was overturned in California in November 2014 with the passage of Proposition 47. The new law reduced six classifications of nonviolent drug and theft-related crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. The “kinder, gentler” approach to punishment for minor crime seems to be spreading across the U.S., reducing prison populations and the cost involved in managing them. Read more
