Drug addiction is currently rampant in the United States. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, more than 23 million Americans are addicted to drugs or alcohol and more than 43,000 of them die of overdoses each year. These frightening statistics make one wonder how drugs can get such a powerful hold on an addict that he or she will risk his or her life to get high. The answer lies in the fact that drugs fundamentally change the way an addict’s brain functions to make quitting more difficult (The Washington Post, “Brain changes in an addict make it hard to resist heroin and similar drugs”).
